Here are some common problems and their solutions:

Loss of Internet connectivity (cable and DSL) - the infamous "power cycle:"

  1. Unplug the power cord to your modem and your router (if you have one). Shut down the computer. The order is not important here.
  2. Wait about 20 seconds for the unit to completely decharge.
  3. Here the order is important. First, insert the power cord back into the modem. Wait until you have solid lights (about 20-30 seconds). Second, plug the power cord back into your router (if present) and wait another 20-30 seconds. Now, turn the computer back on. Most likely, the problem should be resolved.

Spyware info

Plagued by annoying pop-up ads? Be leary of software claiming that "Your computer is infected" or "We have detected several errors on your system - click here to download the fixer" or something on those lines. Some of this software can actually put more spyware on your computer, making the problem worse. Some states are starting to crack down on this sort of malicous fraud, as seen in this recent story on www.informationweek.com.
